Let N−n (λ) denote the number of conjugacy classes of the symmetric group Sn on which the irreducible character χλ is negative, with classes counted without size weights. Hopkins’ problem OPAC-038 asks whether, for all sufficiently large n, this statistic is maximized by the sign representation.
